McCaffrey's Markets
BrightFarms and McCaffreys Markets announced, in October 2011, plans for the development of a BrightFarms Ultra Local Greenhouse.
The BrightFarms-McCaffrey’s greenhouse will be built on, or near a McCaffrey’s store in Pennsylvania. It will provide premium grade, Ultra-Local Produce to McCaffrey’s stores, all year round.
BrightFarms will operate the greenhouse under exclusive arrangement for McCaffreys.
Ultra-Local = No Trucking = Better Quality Produce
The greenhouse will initially grow a range of head and mixed lettuces, several varieties of tomato as well as a range of fresh cut herbs. Other items will be added over time.
The Ultra-Local Produce grown in the BrightFarms-McCaffrey’s Greenhouse will be grown for taste and not shelf life; it will be picked when ripe or ready and will arrive on McCaffrey’s shelves within 24hours of being harvested.
Produce grown in the BrightFarms-McCaffrey’s Greenhouse will therefore be the freshest, tastiest and most nutritious produce available anywhere.
Environmental Impact
BrightFarms uses state of the art hydroponic greenhouse technology in the design of their greenhouses, to grow produce onsite, with no need for long distance trucking and storage.
The BrightFarms-McCaffreys Greenhouse will use a low carbon energy source to reduce fossil fuel use and carbon emission and will capture rainwater for the greenhouse irrigation and cooling needs.
Produce grown in the BrightFarms-McCaffrey’s Greenhouse will not only taste better and last longer; it will also be grown using sustainable methods
Produce will be grown:
• with NO agricultural runoff
• with NO carbon emissions
• with up to 10 times less land and 7 times less water than produce grown with conventional methods
