The Cypress Hills Community School, P.S. 89, is an innovative, successful, community-based, bilingual (Spanish/English), public school in northeastern Brooklyn.
BrightFarm Systems was commission to design and construct the interior agricultural and education systems for the greenhouse structure at the new Cypress Hills Community School (PS 89) building.
The facility will broaden the school’s scientific curriculum while demonstrating hydroponic food production and seedling cultivation techniques. The greenhouse interior design makes use of a number of different growing systems including an integrated aquaponics system and BrightFarm System’s patented vertical growing technology, the Vertically Integrated Greenhouse.
Secondary infrastructure systems such as water filtration technologies, passive ventilation strategies, and supplemental lighting were also installed to facilitate successful biological growth.
The school was founded in 1997 through the efforts of community-activist parents working in cooperation with the Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation, a community-based nonprofit organization working to improve the Cypress Hills/East New York community for the past 26 years.
PS89 currently serves 450 students from Kindergarten through 8th grade.
